Over four decades of advocating for and supporting the private sector in Solomon Islands since our establishment in 1978.
SICCI was established on July 7, 1978, shortly after Solomon Islands gained independence. Founding members recognized the critical need for a unified private sector voice to participate in shaping the economic future of the newly independent nation. The Chamber's creation marked a pivotal moment – bringing together diverse businesses from commerce, agriculture, fisheries, and services to speak with one voice.
During this formative decade, SICCI established its governance structures, elected its first Board of Directors, and opened a permanent Secretariat office in Honiara. The Chamber began regular consultations with government ministries and secured representation on key national economic advisory bodies. Membership grew from 25 founding members to over 80 businesses by decade's end.
SICCI was formally recognized by the National Parliament as the peak representative body for the private sector. The Chamber launched its annual Business Excellence Awards, established sector-specific working committees, and began publishing quarterly economic bulletins. Strategic partnerships with regional chambers and international development organizations expanded SICCI's capacity to serve members.
During the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) period, SICCI played a crucial role supporting business continuity and economic recovery. The Chamber advocated for business-friendly policies during reconstruction, launched training programs for SMEs, and facilitated public-private dialogue on post-conflict development priorities. Membership remained resilient, demonstrating the private sector's commitment to national recovery.
SICCI became a founding member of the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO), elevating Solomon Islands business interests to the regional stage. The Chamber expanded services to outer provinces, established a women in business program, launched Business After 5 networking events, and introduced business advisory services. Strategic partnerships with ADB, World Bank, and bilateral donors enabled enhanced member support programs.
Responding to COVID-19, SICCI rapidly digitized services, launched virtual events, and advocated successfully for targeted business support packages. The Chamber introduced online membership platforms, digital business directory, mobile app for members, and expanded advocacy reach through social media. Post-pandemic, SICCI continues championing digital economy policies, supporting e-commerce adoption, and building private sector climate resilience. Today, with over 200 members representing 80% of the formal workforce, SICCI stands stronger than ever as the authoritative voice of business in Solomon Islands.
